“Music In the Age of AI and Machine Learning”

Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the way we think about computing and humanity. Progress is so rapid that our ideas about AI capabilities and limitations change constantly. This is a fantastic time for artists as well as technologists, as AI and especially Machine Learning have opened up many new creative possibilities. I will review some historical achievements in AI and music, discuss some recent developments, and describe one of the frontiers of music and AI, which is interactive performance. In this area, training on a large diverse corpus of conventional music may not be useful for coherent and creative interaction with a particular performer, and real-time constraints limit the use of big-data techniques. I will describe my own work in this direction, including experiments using a new flow model based on matrix exponentiation for music improvisation.

Bio:  Roger B. Dannenberg is Emeritus Professor of Computer Science, Art & Music at Carnegie Mellon University, where he received a Ph.D. in Computer Science, and is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery. Known for his research in the field of computer music, he co-created the most popular audio editor Audacity, developed music programming languages, and pioneered techniques for real-time computer accompaniment. He works on live music performance with artificial computer musicians, automatic music composition, and interactive media systems. Prof. Dannenberg is also a trumpet player and composer who co-composed the opera La Mare dels Peixos.
