Disinformation Workshop with CEFIRE and Learn to Check

Digital Verification and Combatting Misinformation Course
Organized by American Space Valencia and Learn to Check

Course Objectives:

This course aims to reflect on misinformation and provide practical tools for its verification in the educational field. Participants will learn how to identify and cross-check false information and incorporate activities and projects related to misinformation into the classroom.

Specific Objectives:

  • Reflect on misinformation and its effects.
  • Provide techniques and digital verification tools.
  • Dive into the phenomenon of misinformation on social media and digital platforms.
  • Learn how to verify various types of content, such as text, photographs, videos, AI-generated posts, and social media accounts.
  • Explore pedagogical resources for media literacy in the classroom.

 

Course Content:

Session 1: Misinformation and its Consequences

  • What misinformation is and how it affects us.
  • The current phenomenon: who deceives us and why.
  • Strategies and types of misinformation.

Session 2: Foundations of Digital Verification

  • The process of digital verification.
  • Techniques to cross-check information.
  • Verifying images, videos, and AI-generated content.
  • Analyzing social media accounts.

Session 3: Scientific Knowledge Against Fake News

  • Tools to cross-check scientific information.
  • Consequences of scientific misinformation.
  • Misinformation in health and with data, graphs, and maps.

Session 4: Misinformation and Hate Speech

  • Social misinformation and its effects.
  • Malicious misinformation and its connection to hate speech.
  • Pedagogical resources to combat hate and misinformation.

Session 5: Journalism and Media Literacy Against Misinformation

  • How journalistic fact-checkers work.
  • Educational tools for the classroom (primary level).

Session 6: Media Literacy Against Misinformation

  • Pedagogical resources for secondary school and high school.
  • Educational experiences in digital verification.
  • Designing practical classroom activities.

 

Target Audience:
This course is aimed at educators from any field and level, particularly those interested in combating fake news in the classroom using digital verification tools.

 

Conditions:
Participants must be non-university educators in public and private schools in the Valencian Community. Admission will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis following these criteria:

  1. Career/trainee civil servants.
  2. Active interim civil servants.
  3. Civil servants on the job pool.
  4. Non-civil servants (teachers in private schools).
  5. Other educators.

 

Remarks:
The online synchronous sessions will take place from 17:00 to 19:30 on June 25, 26, 27, and 30, and July 1 and 2, 2025.
A task will be required to cover the remaining 5 hours of the course.
